DocEng 2007 Venue and Local Arrangements
Location.
DocEng 2007 will be held in the Engineering and Information Technology Complex, EITC,
at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.
The EITC building is numbered 28 and may be found in square F6 of
the following map.
EITC comprises three sub-buildings; DocEng will take place in the building labelled E2 which
houses the department of Computer Science.
Transport to the University.
A special (free) bus service will be provided for DocEng delegates
each morning and evening
between downtown Winnipeg
and the DocEng conference site at the University of Manitoba.
On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, August 29, 30 and 31, this bus will
depart from the Fort Garry hotel on Broadway at 7:30 a.m.
On Thursday and Friday, the bus will return from the University to the
Fort Garry hotel after the final conference session.
On Wednesday the bus will leave from the University Club
at 9:30 p.m. (21h30) after the evening banquet.
The Fort Garry hotel is a short walk from most of the downtown hotels.
City of Winnipeg Transport.
To reach the University at other times, or if your hotel is not
downtown, you are advised
to consult the
extensive Winnipeg transit site
here. In particular,
the no. 60 bus runs every 5-6 minutes between downtown
and the University. The bus stops at the University are located very
close to EITC, specifically where the
lettering Dafoe Road appears on
this map.
A plan of central Winnipeg showing most hotels and all the
downtown bus stops
can be found
here.
The Winnipeg transit site allows you to plan other journeys easily.
The cash fare is $2.00 for up to one hour -- if you need to
take more than one bus, ask for a (free) "transfer".
Taxis.
A number of taxicab services are available; two of the largest are Unicity Taxi
(204 925 3131) and Duffy's Taxi (204 925 0101).
A taxi from downtown Winnipeg to the University of Manitoba will probably cost
approximately $20.00
Use of Automobile.
Use of your own car to access the conference site
is not recommended.
Visitor parking on the University of Manitoba Campus is quite limited and tends
to get full fairly
early in the day.
Public (visitor) parking includes some meters, an area controlled by a ticket dispenser,
and a parkade, and may be found on the
following
parking map.
Do not park in any reserved parking lot, and please note that the conference
organizers cannot "fix" their own tickets, let alone those of visitors!
Registration Desk.
Delegates may register and pick up their conference materials
from 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 29.
Registration will take place in room EITC, Room E2-461; there will be
signposts to guide the way.
A continental breakfast will also be provided at 8:00 a.m. each morning
at the conference site.
Working Session.
The Working Session on Document Engineering Education will be held in EITC Room E2-461
on Tuesday August 28. Registration will begin at 12:45 p.m. and the session will start
at 13:00.
Note that no bus service will be provided in connection with this meeting; see
above for details of City of Winnipeg transit services to and from the University.
Weather.
Winnipeg weather is notoriously difficult to predict accurately.
However, it appears that
the weather for DocEng will be mostly very sunny but somewhat cooler than is normal
for this time of year. Daytime highs will be about 20 deg. C (68 deg F) with
overnight lows of around 8 deg. C (47 deg F). It should get somewhat warmer
as the week progresses. Snow is not likely, and we
will probably escape without a blizzard. Then again, this is Winnipeg,
and one never knows...
